Australian cultural historian Professor Joy Damousi has even remarked that the Greek community, “transformed Melbourne’s culture through its immediate difference like food […] the Greeks have made a great successful migration story.” Clearly, it seems lambs gyros and souvlaki have found a home with the Aussies. In fact, the numbers back up this little joke; Melbourne now holds the largest population of Greek people outside of Greece itself. Outside of their ancestral homeland, Greek restaurants in Melbourne may be the most authentic-tasting in the world.
